What I’ve Learned in Organic Church: An Introduction to a Series

A few of the saints here in Gainesville, FL got together before the holidays and decided to share what we’ve learned thus far in Organic Church. So in the coming weeks we will be sharing with you what we’ve learned by posting articles on each of our blogs.

We were “established” as an ekklesia in August, 2009. A few of the bloggers that will be sharing have been here from the beginning, others joined later. But most of us have been meeting this way for at least a year.

I designed this a couple of years ago

The reason we started this series is to share with others what we’ve learned; which includes our successes, our failures, our good-times, our hard-times, and through bitter-sweet experience. You’ll find some stories to be quite humorous, others quite sad. You may find some inspiring. But we hope, above all else, that you will see Christ in a new way…or at least in a larger way as we wish to express Him to you through our experience in Organic Church life.

Please note: The series includes only what we’ve come to discover by experience. This series is not meant to be a “rule book” or a “how-to” to Organic Church Life. Also, please be aware that we are still learning what it means to have Christ as Head in our group. We are, by no means, experts on the topic. However, experience does outweigh book-learning and theory by a hundred-fold. In fact, most of the books written on the topic have been learned by experience, not theory.

Below is a list of all the bloggers that will be participating. For now, it only includes the saints here in Gainesville, FL., though we hope to include others in the future (it really depends on how this series goes). I have spent much time with the brothers and sisters listed below. They are truly saints of gold and I would do anything for them. Also, the revelation of Christ that each one of them carries is unique, carries depth and weight, and is invaluable. I am truly blessed to have them as brothers and sisters in Christ. I have the best friends on earth.

The posts will be one per week from a particular person. Don’t worry about trying to find out who is writing in a given week, I’ll be posting the link and title here each week, as they will be doing the same. I’d also encourage you to go and subscribe to some of these blogs…they are golden.

Tomorrow, I’ll be starting the series with a post titled, “Just Let it Go!”. So be looking out for that one. Hope you enjoy!

**UPDATE: The first post will be titled, “The Difference Between Brotherhood and Buddyhood”.

  1. I think this is great. We have much theory, but few who speak out of the actual experience. So much that is posted in the name of “organic church” is reactionary, rather than expressing true fellowship among real believers who are committed to the nitty gritty of real community. I look forward to following this blog.

  2. I joined The Church at Orlando about nine months ago – i had read about organic church before i experienced it and so i had a frame of reference – i went the first time just to check it out – i went more out of an academic curiosity & i didnt expect for it to capture me, which of course it did almost immediately
what i have learned in organic church is that the body (the 20-some folks in our group) transcends the meetings – some of our meetings are brilliant & one can feel the Lord’s presence & leadership and others are: “what was that all about?” At least that’s my experience – there are some in our group who feel much differently based on the comments on our FB page the following day – however, there is a loving integrity in our group that is astounding – i would hope that most organic groups are like that and that that is truly the manifestation of the Lord thru His Body – right off hand i cant think of another term other than “loving integrity”
i love the constant support that i see via comments on our facebook page & the meetings of guys, ladies & kids during the week – it’s pretty much ongoing fellowship – there is a great diversity in our bunch in personality types, spiritual gifts, occupations, age range, education, tempermen, etc – i think that’s ideal – and in that diversity i see the Lord’s hand – one would not think we would meld as well as we do – we dont have any ethnic minorities as yet but i look forward to that – having our own closed FB page gives an immediacy to the interactions and allows folks an to be very transparent.
I started attending a Celebrate Recovery group about a year before organic church & i first went to that more or less out of curiosity too – surprise, surprise: CR captured me as well and its where i go most fri evenings – it also led to me staying in a drug rehab in Scotland last summer for 10-days – at Sunnybrae i received more experiential learning about christian community – i’ve found many similarities between that experience & organic church – there’s a transparency & intense spirituality in many 12-step groups & recovery program like Teen Challenge sadly lacking in most institutional churches – the organic church experience + CR + reading Bonhoeffer’s “Life Together” around the same time has convinced me of what His church should resemble. carl

  3. Brother, this sounds fantastic! Really looking forward to reading these posts. As someone who is seeking and praying for this kind of experience, this is truly a great opportunity to be able to get an insight in what organic church life could be like.

Love in Christ to you all! // Daniel
